On Friday, the Board of Regents for the Texas A&M University System appointed Comptroller Glenn Hegar ’93 as the only finalist for the position of chancellor of The Texas A&M University System.

Hegar, representing the Republican Party, previously held positions in the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate before being elected as comptroller in 2014. He achieved re-election in both 2018 and 2022.

The Board of Regents’ decision on Friday was made with unanimous support.

“The Board is assured that Glenn Hegar is prepared to lead the next phase of excellence at The Texas A&M University System,” stated Bill Mahomes, the chair of the Board of Regents. “Hegar comprehends the distinctive reach and significance of the System’s influence across Texas via its eight state agencies and 11 universities. We, as Board of Regents members, look forward to witnessing his accomplishments.”

According to state legislation, there is a 21-day commentary period before the Board can confirm their appointment.

If the final endorsement from the board is granted, Hegar will take over from Chancellor John Sharp, who has been the longest-serving chancellor in the Texas A&M System’s history. Sharp has indicated that he will resign from his role on June 30 after nearly 14 years.

Hegar, raised in Hockley, is a sixth-generation Texan whose family has farmed the same land since the mid-1800s.
A 1993 graduate of Texas A&M University, he also obtained a Master of Arts and law degree from St. Mary’s University. Additionally, he received a Master of Laws from the University of Arkansas.

Hegar and his spouse, Dara, have three children: Claire, Julia, and Jonah.

Mahomes further noted: “The Board members were delighted to see such a strong interest and numerous qualified individuals during its search for chancellor. We extend our gratitude to everyone who participated in this thorough search and selection procedure.”
