Sanford H. Orkin, the past president of Orkin Pest Control and a long-time benefactor of the University of Georgia and the Terry College of Business, passed away on March 4. He was 93 years old.
Orkin served as a trustee for both the UGA Foundation and the UGA Real Estate Foundation. His legacy is commemorated in a building bearing his name alongside that of his deceased wife, Barbara, within the Terry College Business Learning Community. The Sanford and Barbara Orkin Hall — situated at the intersection of Baxter and Hull streets — features a spacious auditorium, undergraduate classrooms, a behavioral laboratory, a marketing research computer lab, interview suites, in addition to faculty and administrative offices.
The Orkin family generously provided scholarships for students in financial need and established a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar position at the Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases. They also contributed to UGA’s School of Law, Mary Frances Early College of Education, College of Public Health, Carl Vinson Institute of Government, Athletic Association, as well as the Georgia Museum of Art, among various other initiatives. The museum pays tribute to their generosity and commitment to the arts with the Sanford and Barbara Orkin Gallery.
In 2015, the Barbara and Sanford H. Orkin Family Foundation established a $1 million scholarship fund aimed at offering financial assistance for tuition, books, housing, and other living expenses for academically gifted individuals from underprivileged backgrounds.
