Fangqiong Ling, an assistant professor specializing in energy, environmental, and chemical engineering at the McKelvey School of Engineering, Washington University in St. Louis, has been recognized as one of ACS Environmental Au’s 2024 “Rising Stars in Environmental Research.”
The journal has selected an international cohort of 18 emerging scholars in environmental science for its yearly compilation of individuals dedicated to enhancing the comprehension of intricate environmental challenges and devising innovative technologies to address or alleviate pollution.

Ling’s research team investigates the mechanisms behind the formation of microbial communities within urban settings, utilizing a combination of field studies, laboratory experiments, and computational techniques to comprehend how microbes engage with urban environmental factors. Her laboratory strives to provide insights that can enhance engineering solutions for urban infrastructure, public health, and sustainability.
Furthermore, Jessica Ray, who obtained her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 2009 and continued on to earn master’s and doctoral degrees in energy, environmental, and chemical engineering from the same institution in 2015, has also been acknowledged as one of the 18 “Rising Stars.”
Ray holds the position of Robert and Irene Sylvester assistant professor in the civil and environmental engineering department at the University of Washington.
