Harmonizing Full-Time Employment and Online Education to Excel in the Technology Sector
Jeremy Samuel’s online academic venture exemplifies his commitment and the transformative effect of ongoing education. While working full-time at JPMorgan, Jeremy has sought not just one, but two master’s degrees at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Most recently, he wrapped up the Master of Computer Science in Data Science (MCS-DS) online through the Grainger College of Engineering and is now intensifying his studies to achieve the Master of Science in Technology Management (MSTM) from Gies College of Business on campus.
Enhancing Technical Knowledge
Recognizing the necessity to stay current with advancements and the constantly changing tech sector, Jeremy determined that the MCS-DS program was an ideal choice. He discovered the coursework to be both demanding and gratifying, especially in the realms of machine learning and artificial intelligence. “The courses were incredibly thorough and addressed pertinent skills applicable to today’s industry developments,” he expressed. This extensive technical understanding not only augmented his abilities but also ignited a greater passion for research and advanced scholarship.
Shifting to Leadership Roles
Upon finishing the MCS-DS curriculum, Jeremy transitioned to the MSTM program to advance his aspirations in technical leadership. In this subsequent master’s experience, he honed skills with tools that would assist him in making effective data-driven choices, an essential competency for leadership positions in the tech realm. Acknowledging the alignment between these two degrees, Jeremy remarked, “I acquired the ability to interpret and analyze data in the MCS-DS program, and I’m learning how to utilize that data for decision-making in the MSTM.” This synthesis of technical prowess and management training has well-prepared him for his forthcoming professional advancement.
Learning from Mumbai
While he was enrolled in the MCS-DS program, Jeremy was situated in Mumbai, which presented several challenges due to time zone differences affecting work hours and collaborative tasks. Nonetheless, Jeremy commended the program’s flexibility and structure, which alleviated any obstacles through recorded lectures and an active Slack channel for asynchronous inquiries. He noted, “The program team excels at connecting students within similar time zones to facilitate easier collaboration.”
Balancing Work and Education
The online nature of the MCS-DS program significantly influenced Jeremy’s decision to pursue his education during the pandemic. “I was initially reluctant to relocate from home due to the fear of Covid, and the online format allowed me to continue my studies while remaining secure,” he stated. The program’s adaptability enabled him to manage his full-time role at JPMorgan alongside his MCS-DS coursework. He has since departed JPMorgan and redirected his focus toward his second master’s degree on campus in Champaign, Illinois. “The transition to the on-campus MSTM program was seamless because of my previous experiences at the university,” Jeremy added.
Aspired Future
Jeremy is now pursuing positions that enable him to leverage his technical abilities and leadership expertise. He aspires to enhance his capabilities as a leader in the industry while utilizing both of his dynamic and synergistic degrees. His educational journey from the MCS-DS to the MSTM highlights the significance of continuous improvement and learning in an ever-evolving tech landscape.
