Hailing from South Korea, Kim brings a wealth of international exposure to the institution as he interacts with students through guest lectures and mentoring opportunities, highlighting the leadership tenets critical for triumph in the hospitality realm.

Prior to his entry into academia, Kim held significant managerial positions at prestigious hotel brands including Park Hyatt, Sofitel, Marriott, and Westin. His vast industry knowledge, along with his academic insights in New Zealand, where he served as co-leader of the Pacific Tourism Data Initiative Research Team, makes him a valuable resource for the college.


What led to your involvement in the hospitality sector?

My venture into the hospitality sector commenced in South Korea during my early twenties as a valet attendant at a hotel, where I rapidly developed a passion for the field. I relished the opportunities to meet new individuals and assist them, which spurred my exploration of diverse roles, transitioning from valet to driver, doorman, bellman, restaurant room service, and front office manager, progressively advancing through the ranks. Each position imparted crucial lessons, from the significance of first impressions to the subtleties of guest satisfaction, establishing a strong foundation for my career. My enthusiasm for hospitality was sparked by my father, whose career in an international hotel introduced me to the industry’s vibrant dynamics early on. Motivated by this experience, I pursued a professional path in hospitality, earning a master’s in hospitality management from Ohio State University and a doctorate in hospitality and tourism management from Virginia Tech.

How has your experience in different roles influenced your comprehension of the hospitality industry?

Engaging in multiple roles within the hospitality sector provided me with invaluable insights into interpersonal skills, emotional and cultural intelligence, and the necessity of understanding and honoring others. My affinity for encountering new individuals and learning their narratives made me particularly suited for this field, enabling me to interact with a wide range of backgrounds and foster empathy. Each role, from valet to front manager, offered distinct perspectives on industry operations and customer service dynamics, which I now convey to my students, equipping them with real-world experiences and practical knowledge to thrive in their hospitality careers.

What have you appreciated about your interactions with students at FSU, and what core messages do you communicate to them?

I have discovered that the students at FSU are exceptionally driven, enthusiastic, and ambitious. They demonstrate respect for others and harbor a genuine passion for the hospitality field, as well as a deep respect for their instructors. This admiration and pride in their institution distinguish them from students at other universities. They possess the right mindset regarding their major, which is crucial for their success.

I consistently share my personal narratives with them and stress the importance of loving their work. I encourage students to take pride in their efforts since the hospitality sector revolves around assisting, caring for, and honoring others. By recounting my journey and the lessons I’ve acquired, I seek to motivate students to approach their careers with zeal and commitment, thereby ensuring they are adequately prepared for the challenges and rewards awaiting them in the hospitality domain.

What prospects exist in the hospitality industry for FSU students?

The hospitality industry has evolved into a highly globalized sector, presenting outstanding opportunities for students. Major international hotel chains often feature unique programs enabling employees to rotate and relocate across different locations, with general and executive managers frequently being invited to work in diverse countries. Employment in global hotels exposes individuals to various cultures and provides numerous benefits such as complimentary hotel stays, event tickets, training opportunities, and exchange programs. Students pursuing hospitality management have the chance to travel and gain work experience worldwide, acquiring significant insights and broadening their horizons. These international opportunities not only enhance their professional competencies but also contribute to their personal development, equipping them to be more adaptable and competitive in the global employment landscape.

In what manner do you leverage your previous experiences to enrich your teaching and prepare students for their careers?

My journey within the hospitality sector has been replete with experiences that I am eager to share with my students. I believe it’s vital for students to find a harmonious balance between absorbing real-life narratives and learning from educational materials. In today’s world, they have access to a plethora of valuable information on platforms like YouTube, but they often overlook authentic stories and lessons — so, I consistently share my personal anecdotes in the classroom, connecting them to relevant concepts or theories. This method helps me establish rapport with students and enhances engagement in the learning process. As an educator, my role extends beyond merely imparting information. My experiences within the hospitality industry empower me to connect meaningfully with students eager to build their careers in this sector. I contend that my stories and experiences facilitate their understanding of the industry’s practical facets and inspire them to chase their ambitions with fervor.
