

Texas A&M University has designated U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. James W. Bierman Jr. as the 47th commandant of the Corps of Cadets. Bierman will take on this position starting August 1, following his retirement from active service.
In the capacity of commandant, Bierman will oversee and provide guidance for the administration and operations of the Corps of Cadets, which is the largest uniformed student association in the country outside of the military academies. Tasked as the “Keepers of the Spirit,” the cadets are integral to upholding many of the university’s cherished traditions, including Muster, Silver Taps, and Midnight Yell. Additionally, Bierman will lead the School of Military Sciences and act as a link between the university and the three ROTC departments regarding academic affairs.
Bierman is presently serving as the deputy commandant for plans, policies, and operations for the U.S. Marine Corps, where he is responsible for the formulation and implementation of plans and policies pertaining to the operations, organization, deployment, and utilization of the Marine Corps.
“It’s genuinely an honor and a thrill to become part of the Texas A&M University team as the commandant of the Corps of Cadets,” stated Bierman. “Throughout my career in the Marine Corps, I’ve met numerous Aggie servant-leaders who exemplify this esteemed institution. I am fully dedicated to the mission of the Corps and to preserving its proud legacy within this magnificent university.”
Bierman boasts 37 years of experience in operations, problem-solving, recruitment,
training and education, strategic communication, resourcing, and budget management. He also possesses over 20 years of command experience, including leadership roles in combat operations in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
His educational background includes graduation from the U.S. military’s The Basic School, Infantry Officer Course, Intelligence Officers Course, Amphibious Warfare School, Command and Staff College, School of Advanced Warfighting, and the College of Naval Warfare.

Throughout his career, Bierman has earned multiple military honors, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with gold star, the Bronze Star with combat distinguishing device and two gold stars, as well as the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from the Virginia Military Institute and a Master of Arts in national security studies from the College of Naval Warfare.
Bierman’s appointment follows a national recruitment that attracted many extraordinary candidates.
