The University of Washington has once again received accolades as one of the leading producers of Fulbright students and scholars in American higher education. This acknowledgment is awarded to U.S. colleges and universities that exhibited the highest number of applicants chosen for the 2024-25 Fulbright U.S. Student and Fulbright U.S. Scholar Programs – the primary international exchange initiative managed by the federal government.

The Chronicle of Higher Education released the list on February 25.

A total of 13 UW scholars have obtained Fulbright awards for this academic year: five undergraduates or recent alumni, and eight students at the graduate level. Six faculty members from UW were honored as Fulbright scholars. Overall totals may fluctuate as alternates are selected owing to shifts in travel schedules. Participants in the exchange initiative come from all three campuses.

The Fulbright Program was established to foster mutual understanding between U.S. citizens and individuals from other nations. Fulbright stands as the largest and most varied international educational exchange initiative globally. The principal funding source for the Fulbright Program stems from an annual allocation provided by the U.S. Congress to the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs within the U.S. Department of State.

Since its inception in 1946, this model of citizen diplomacy has seen over 400,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds—including recent graduates, educators, scientists and researchers, artists, and others—engage in the Fulbright Program, returning home with broadened perspectives, profound respect for their host nation and its populace, along with new networks of peers and friends. Fulbright alumni have risen to become heads of state, judges, ambassadors, cabinet officials, CEOs, and university presidents, as well as leading journalists, artists, scientists, and educators. The alumni include 62 Nobel Laureates, 90 Pulitzer Prize recipients, 82 MacArthur Fellows, and thousands of leaders across private, public, and non-profit domains.
