Pianist and composer Jason Moran — Kennedy Center artistic director for jazz and recipient of the MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” — stands out as one of the leading jazz artists active today.

He will be making his UGA Presents debut on Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Hodgson Hall, performing alongside the UGA Jazz Ensemble I in a concert titled “Duke Ellington: My Heart Sings.”

Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (1899-1974) was a monumental influence in American music, unmatched as a pianist, composer, and bandleader. “This event will allow the students to explore the music of Duke Ellington from an earlier stage of his career, guided by a distinguished musician in Jason,” stated David D’Angelo, senior lecturer of jazz at UGA’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music. “This experience is bound to leave a lasting positive impact on the students.”

Moran has made a name for himself as an innovator and pioneer pushing new boundaries in jazz. Since 2000, Moran and his trio The Bandwagon (Tarus Mateen and Nasheet Waits) have captivated audiences at prestigious venues around the globe.

Audiences are invited to a complimentary pre-performance discussion led by James Weidman in Ramsey Concert Hall from 6:45-7:15 p.m.

This performance receives support from The Dixen Foundation as well as Charlie and Teresa Friedlander.
