Eighth Blackbird is a contemporary music ensemble that has won four Grammy Awards and has been described as “one of the most intelligent, vibrant groups on the globe” (Chicago Tribune).

The ensemble’s performance at UGA Presents — on Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Hodgson Concert Hall — features an exciting rendition of “Vital Sines” by Atlanta composer Viet Cuong, in conjunction with the University of Georgia Wind Ensemble.

During the first segment of the concert, Eighth Blackbird will showcase compositions by American musicians Nico Muhly, Ari Sussman, and Joan Tower. Following intermission, prior to “Vital Sines,” the wind ensemble, led by conductor Nicholas Enrico Williams, will present “Legacy,” an oboe concerto by the Spanish composer Óscar Navarro, featuring soloist Michelle Moeller.

“This collaboration has been in the making for nearly two years,” stated Williams, who is a professor of music and the director of bands at UGA. “I am confident that once Eighth Blackbird arrives on our campus, they will provide transformative experiences for both the students and the Hugh Hodgson School of Music as a whole. The culmination of all our combined efforts during the concert in our magnificent Performing Arts Center is an event that should not be overlooked.”

This event is made possible through the support of Jane King’s friends.
