Respondus Lockdown Browser, offered free by Vanderbilt University, allows students to install a customized browser that locks down devices to prevent cheating during online tests. Students can download and use this tool at no cost.
Respondus Lockdown Browser may be required for quizzes in Cougar Courses (Canvas). In such instances, a link to download this software will appear when clicking on a quiz that needs RLDB.
Downloading
When taking an instructor-assigned quiz in Canvas or Blackboard Learn that requires Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor software to run, a link will be provided so you can download it before beginning the quiz. In addition, this link provides details regarding system requirements so it is essential that you read carefully so you understand which components your computer requires in order to run effectively.
After downloading and installing your software, follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation process. This may involve accepting the terms of use and setting where on your computer to install it. After completing installation, restart your computer before beginning to take quiz. Installation

It is available both for Windows and Mac computers and should be downloaded and installed before taking an assessment that requires it. Students should follow any instructions provided when installing or downloading it before taking a quiz that requires it.
Instructors requiring their students to use LockDown Browser should provide a link on each quiz details page that opens in a new window with Respondus browser and monitor download instructions; depending on whether an instructor uses New Quizzes or Classic Quizzes in their course, specific directions will apply.
Students need to login into their student accounts on personal machines in order to install this software, then navigate directly to the course that requires it, along with its quiz, where a prompt to download the browser will appear. After installation has taken place, any programs which could record screen activity must be closed out before closing their browser and closing any applications that capture or record screen activity – the browser cannot capture all screen activity anyway!
Once downloaded, students can begin taking exams with this browser. When done, they can switch back to their regular browser or launch it again by clicking a button on the quiz summary page which will launch it and allow for taking additional quizzes that require it.
If an instructor requires his students to use Monitor, an on-browser proctoring service, the process will remain similar. Students will first need to agree with all terms before beginning an exam; after which they’ll need to verify their identity through webcam and microphone checks as well as perform an environmental sweep of their computer by Monitor.
Some Learning Management Systems require students to first open a regular browser before being able to launch the lockdown browser; for instance, Blackboard Learn allows them to login, open their course page and then click the “Launch LockDown Browser” button on their quiz summary page in order to launch their lockdown browser.
Requirements
