Canvas Respondus Lockdown Browser
Respondus Lockdown Browser is an exam proctoring tool designed to prevent students from printing, copying or visiting other websites during an examination or quiz that requires this solution. Before beginning any such test, students must download and install this browser first.
Instructors can utilize Canvas’ Learning Data Base (LDB) feature to require their students take an examination using this technology either on their personal computers or at university Testing Centers. The LDB contains webcam and video capabilities which help prevent cheating during exams.

Respondus Monitor should be used in tandem with LockDown Browser before creating their first graded exam.
Instructors can easily configure a quiz in Canvas so it requires the Respondus Lockdown Browser for online assessments. To do this, click on the menu icon and select Modify Settings before choosing “Require Respondus Lockdown Browser for this exam. You can also enable monitoring so instructors can remotely view student webcams while taking a quiz.
Once your quiz has been configured, assigning it to groups or individuals is as easy as clicking the menu icon and choosing Edit Assignment. In the Edit Assignment page, check “Require Respondus Lockdown Browser for this assignment”, assign a name and set availability dates as needed.
When assigning a quiz to either a group or an individual, they will receive a notification that they must install Respondus Lockdown Browser prior to taking their assessment. This message includes a link to Yale University’s exclusive Respondus Lockdown Browser download page, after which installation completes, all other programs on the computer will close automatically; when completed and finished taking their assessment they will be sent their results by email.

Students wishing to use the browser must first download and install it onto their laptops prior to taking an exam, closing all programs except one used to connect to the Internet and signing the IU Acceptable Use Agreement and any IU Verify prompts that appear before being able to launch and navigate to a quiz through it. It will notify them if any programs need closing – they must click Yes when prompted by it.
Once students have installed the Respondus browser, they can access a Canvas quiz. If an instructor has configured their quiz to require Respondus Lockdown Browser, students will be prompted to launch it upon clicking on it; due to tablet and Chromebook limitations however, a desktop or laptop computer should be used instead for such assessments.
The browser features several security measures designed to make testing safer, such as a reduced toolbar that displays only Back, Stop, Refresh, Information and Insert Symbol functions. Furthermore, keyboard shortcuts, screen shots, function keys and right-click menus have been disabled; students cannot browse other web servers during tests and blocking student screens is another measure used to thwart accessing unauthorised material during exams.
Respondus Lockdown Browser includes several security features as well as an examination monitoring tool known as Monitor, which records students during exams and can alert instructors if suspicious activity arises during testing sessions. Once a student has downloaded and installed a Lockdown Browser browser, they can navigate directly to their quiz through Canvas. Instructors may include “Requires Lockdown Browser” tags on certain quizzes which will display with a blue checkmark icon in the upper-right corner.
Some quizzes imported from Blackboard require LockDown Browser as well and display a LDB icon in the upper-right corner of their canvas screens, prompting students to launch its dashboard when clicking it. Or they can access their quiz by clicking “Take a Quiz” button in the upper-left corner. By doing so, students cannot leave the test until closing browser window.
It prevents students from using the right mouse button
Respondus Lockdown Browser is a customized browser designed to lock down a student’s testing environment so they cannot access other applications or websites while taking an exam. Furthermore, Respondus Lockdown prevents students from using their right mouse button during examinations which could interfere with certain types of screen capture software. Available both for Windows and Macintosh computers, Respondus LockDown may be used on any graded quiz in Canvas course that requires LockDown environment.
Students must download and practice using Lockdown before taking an exam that requires it, giving themselves ample time to hone their technique and address any potential issues they encounter before the actual test date. Students can access technical support as well as live chat support from UNT Canvas through its help desk and 24-hour live chat support services.
Once students have downloaded a browser, they can take part in the Canvas quiz that requires it. They should enroll in the “Respondus LockDown Browser Practice Quiz” course to take this quiz and ensure it works as intended. They should ensure all other applications have been closed prior to beginning this test.
If the browser doesn’t work as expected, students should reboot their computer and close any background programs such as Dropbox, Skype, Instant Messaging clients, MegaBackup, Spotify or BitTorrent that may be running. Respondus can detect suspicious behavior such as students leaving their computer during an exam or strangers entering through webcam video frames during exams – giving instructors ample evidence for any suspected cheating or violations, which they can review to determine if any violations have occurred and then notify students about these violations either via an additional exam attempt or expulsion from class.
