Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor provide an effective means of combatting cheating during tests/exams by creating a restricted testing environment on computers where students cannot print, copy or access other URLs/applications while taking an exam.

If a test in Blackboard Learn requires Respondus LockDown Browser, your instructor should provide a download link within either the test itself or their learning system. Simply follow their instructions to download and install Respondus LockDown Browser.

Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus Lockdown Browser is an online proctoring tool designed to prevent cheating during online tests. Instructors can create and administer exams while restricting student access to other programs, documents and external websites; this protects against exam fraud which has become an increasing problem at universities and other educational institutions. Furthermore, keyboard shortcuts or features used for cheating during tests are disabled while its closed-source design makes it more secure against being bypassed by hackers.

Instructors in Canvas can require students to use LockDown browser during an online quiz or exam by providing them with a unique link that appears within the test instructions screen. Once clicked, students should install and launch it prior to taking the exam and follow any special instructions given from instructor regarding how Respondus tools should be utilized or what should happen if an issue arises.

Some students may experience difficulties using LockDown Browser if they are running antivirus software on their computers, especially if this blocks it from performing its final environment check and results in an error when trying to install. If this occurs, they should close down the antivirus program and retry to install their browser.

Problems may also arise if using a wireless Internet connection instead of Ethernet cable to access Brightspace server, as wireless connections are more prone to dropped and interrupted connections, hindering student’s ability to save answers, advance through questions or submit exam. To minimize such issues, students taking an online exam in Blackboard should use either an Ethernet cable connection or connect directly to their router when taking exams online.

Text-to-speech software may cause issues when used with LockDown browser, so students should ensure all other applications have been closed before launching it. They should also reboot their computers prior to doing this.

Respondus Monitor

Respondus Monitor is software used to proctor online tests. Compatible with popular learning systems such as Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Brightspace Pearson MyLab and McGraw Hill ALEKS it offers web browser-based proctoring for these exams to prevent cheating during online testing by blocking access to other websites and applications on test taker’s computers while taking tests online; additionally it records video of each exam taker and flags any suspicious activities such as leaving or someone entering their frame that may arise during testing sessions.

Students can access Respondus Monitor via their learning system where they’ll find an assigned module that explains how and where to download their browser/monitor, along with practice quizzes and a quick start guide for using it. Faculty can then copy this module into their courses with additional instructions for student use.

Respondus Monitor stands out from other online proctoring tools by being installed directly onto each student computer and offering an interactive live video and audio chat with students to verify identity and an image of their ID as well as an audio recording of where and when they take their exam. Furthermore, instructors can view an post-exam report which can help identify possible cheating attempts such as location or face recognition of students.

The browser and monitor work together to create an inaccessible testing environment suitable for lab or classroom exams. The browser keeps students from printing, copying or accessing another URL during an exam and may even disable keyboard and mouse use during exams; on the other hand, monitor captures video footage of individual students that allows it to recognize different faces.

The Monitor is compatible with most Windows, Mac, and Chromebook devices and accessible to students with disabilities through access programs like VoiceOver or JAWS on Mac OS and JAWS on Windows operating systems respectively. Respondus is software that creates exams/quizzes/surveys that can be distributed directly to students within an LMS, including non-proctored online testing and virtual proctoring features. Respondus supports a range of question types including multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blanks (fill-in), essays matching/ordering. Respondus offers advanced functionality designed to prevent cheating such as time limits for testing sessions and question randomization with question groups – as well as features limiting test duration/randomization/grouping capabilities allowing students access.

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser developed specifically to work with Canvas that will block students from accessing applications or websites on their computers during an online quiz, including printing or copying it, printing multiple copies or copying parts from it to paste elsewhere, resizing, closing or switching to another website while it remains open – helping ensure online exams are being taken only by those authorized and protecting academic integrity.

Respondus Monitor is an add-on to Respondus Lockdown Browser that helps institutions combat cheating during non-proctored online assessments by using student webcams to record them while taking tests. Instructors then have access to review these videos in order to assess if all assessment requirements were fulfilled correctly and whether any cheating occurred during administration of exams. Furthermore, Respondus Monitor features facial recognition technology which monitors poorly positioned or covered webcams or detects whether students may intentionally cover their faces during taking assessments.

Support

LockDown Browser integrates seamlessly with learning systems like Canvas, Schoology, Moodle and Blackboard Learn for schools using them as exam access is delivered directly within those platforms, just like it would through an ordinary web browser. Students access exams directly in their learning system as if accessing exams directly online would.

Numerous methods of cheating are disabled, including instant messaging, screen recording and virtual machines. Furthermore, students are prohibited from copy/pasting text or accessing other applications during exams – giving instructors confidence that students are actually engaged with thinking independently during online assessments.

The July update to RLDB introduced an auto-update function, which begins automatically whenever students access RLDB. This helps ensure students always use the most recent version of RLDB, optimizing their experience for test proctoring and other features integrated within it.

Starting out with RLDB is straightforward. Students can download and install their custom browser from their institution’s app store, or find quick start guides in their LMS. Instructors can create a practice non-graded exam that requires using RLDB and distribute it amongst their students to familiarise themselves with its capabilities.
