Download Lockdown Browser On Chromebook
If your instructor has created a quiz in Canvas using Respondus LDB + Monitor, students can install Respondus Lockdown Browser Monitor extension to secure their browser during assessment. It is imperative that this extension is properly installed prior to starting an exam.
The extension also prevents students from accessing other applications on their computer or searching the web for answers.
Features
If you’re taking online exams on a Chromebook and would like a different way of conducting them, Respondus Lockdown Browser may be worth looking into. This tool aims to prevent students from cheating during tests by blocking access to any programs or websites which might contain relevant material about what is being tested, personal accounts or messaging apps that might access other subjects during an exam and block sites associated with specific LMSs.
Respondus Lockdown Browser for Chromebook is a free extension for the Chrome browser that works in conjunction with Respondus Monitor proctoring app, making exams possible within Canvas, Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace, Moodle, and Schoology learning management systems. Compatible with student-owned devices as well as institutionally owned ones – and now including iPad support to enable instructors to offer exams on those devices too!
Students looking to install their browser can visit the official web page and click “Add to Chrome,” following the prompts to install a plugin quickly and effortlessly. After installation is complete, they should close or restart Chrome before logging in their course and taking any exams or quizzes on Canvas.
Once students are logged in, they should select the option to require the Respondus Lockdown Browser on their computer. This will prevent them from copy and pasting content, printing documents, taking screenshots or accessing other programs on their device; additionally, it will disable their camera if present.
Instructors may require the Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor during an exam by selecting the radio button “Require Respondus LockDown Browser.” This feature prevents students from searching Google or messaging classmates during testing – making the test more secure. Please be aware this feature only available for certain exams and must be enabled individually per exam.
Functions
Are You Using a Chromebook as a Student? Respondus LockDown Browser can now be used on these devices! This program was created to assist students in taking exams in an environment free of distractions; students can use Respondus LockDown Browser to access Blackboard tests and can’t leave until their assessments have been submitted; in addition, no copying, printing, accessing other applications or websites during testing is allowed.
The browser also enables instructors to grant and revoke access for specific students, and monitor student activity during exams. Furthermore, this feature prevents copying or sharing answers through instant messaging or screen capture programs; keeping classrooms from becoming an arena for online cheating while helping teachers avoid academic dishonesty.
Respondus Monitor is an automated proctoring solution that utilizes webcam technology to record a student’s face and body during exams and quizzes. Students can install this extension by following the link to download and install Respondus Monitor software directly on their device – either personal Chromebooks or school-owned Chromebooks can follow this path to access Google Chrome Web Store where they can select “Add to Chrome” to install Respondus Monitor onto their devices.
Once installed, the LockDown Browser for Chromebook extension works with any quizzes or exams enabled for use with browsers by instructors. If a student attempts to take an exam that does not require browser use they will encounter an “Google Chrome OS Cannot Open This Page” error message when trying.
This new extension can be used with exams delivered in Canvas, Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace, Moodle and Schoology (LockDown Browser and Monitor are not yet supported on Schoology). Teachers can enable LockDown Browser/Monitor per exam. Managed Chromebook owners should refer to the Administrator Guide for additional guidance; while iPad version of LockDown Browser/Monitor software deployment can be accomplished using Apple Configurator.
Installation
Respondus LockDown Browser is an educational tool that provides students with a distraction-free environment for taking exams. It prevents them from searching Google for answers or using messaging apps to request help from classmates, thus eliminating cheating and improving assessment quality. Until recently, however, this software was only available at schools affiliated with learning management systems (LMS). However, Chromebooks now make this browser even more accessible!
Before students can access tests that require LockDown Browser software installation on their device, they must install it first. This process is straightforward and can be accomplished quickly; once activated it will remain active until the conclusion of an exam. Students can download it from Blackboard Student Support tab and follow its instructions according to their operating system.
Once installed, students can login to their LMS and find tests requiring Respondus Lockdown Browser. When they click the title of a test, it will launch automatically, with prompts to close or restart their computers as necessary if prompted to do so by Respondus LockDown Browser upon launch. Upon activation, Respondus LockDown Browser may require entering an exam password if none was previously supplied by student.
Once their test is over, students can quickly exit their browser by either submitting the formative assessment or entering their Quit Password – this option can be enabled in the Settings of Lockdown Browser. Teachers should provide students with this Quit Password so they may exit in case of technical difficulties with their computer or an emergency situation.
Students looking to unlock their browser may use a built-in utility found within the program’s menu or pin an extension directly onto their chrome toolbar and use that button to delete problematic cookies from a specific group of them. Please keep in mind, however, that this method will not fully delete all the cookies on their device and may cause other applications to crash; only use it if unable to access their test in Chrome browser.
Compatibility
Use of exam and quiz software prevents students from searching online for answers or asking classmates for assistance via instant messaging, and prevents unauthorised access to browser during exams by blocking any other applications that might be running (this includes screen capture apps that might capture images of keyboard or mouse; other programs don’t gain access to microphone/webcam etc.). Furthermore, it blocks other forms of access like screen capture applications preventing students from taking screenshots with keyboard/mouse, keeping students honest during exams/quizzes.
Respondus LockDown Browser Chromebook extension is available to students taking exams in Canvas, Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace and Schoology.
