EVENT: Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian political figure, writer, historian, and former political detainee, will be honored with the 2025 Wallenberg Medal by the University of Michigan.

Kara-Murza is set to present the 30th Wallenberg Lecture, entitled “Free Individuals in an Oppressive Nation: Resisting Kremlin Autocracy, Past and Present.” In line with the tradition of the Wallenberg Lecture, Kara-Murza will utilize his personal journey to convey his insights on how a single individual can create significant change with the audience.

He has also been awarded numerous honors, including the Council of Europe’s Václav Havel Human Rights Prize, and holds the distinction of honorary fellow at Trinity Hall, Cambridge.

The Wallenberg Medal and Lecture series commemorates a humanitarian who embodies the legacy of Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish native who graduated from the U-M College of Architecture in 1935.

Recent Wallenberg Medal awardees include global environmental advocate Nnimmo Bassey, executive director of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (2024); Lucas Benitez, co-founder of the Florida-based labor and human rights group the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (2023); and Safa Al Ahmad, Saudi Arabian journalist and documentary filmmaker (2019).

No tickets are necessary. The Wallenberg Medal and Lecture ceremony is complimentary and accessible to the public.
