UGA Presents is pleased to host the Camerata Nordica Octet at Hodgson Concert Hall on Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m.

This concert, part of the “Nordic Dream: Voices from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden” series, will showcase the global debut tour of Hanna Helgegren’s “The Nordic Seasons,” a composition influenced by Scandinavian folk melodies and coupled with a film.

Established in 1974, Camerata Nordica has emerged as Sweden’s premier chamber orchestra. Comprising artists from various European nations, the ensemble has garnered acclaim throughout its tours in South America, the United States, Canada, and its inaugural performance at the BBC Proms in 2013. The octet’s initial tour in North America highlights its innovative programming, blending folk-influenced adaptations and modern expressions with an iconic piece for strings.

The Athens concert commences with traditional Swedish tunes reinvented by Camerata Nordica, segueing into “The Nordic Seasons.” This newly commissioned composition is inspired by Nordic folk customs, the surrounding landscapes, and the seasonal cycles, accompanied by a specially crafted film by British director Jack Walton.

The lineup continues with Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Two Pieces for String Octet,” composed when the artist was just 19. It wraps up with one of chamber music’s most cherished masterpieces: Felix Mendelssohn’s dynamic “Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20,” written when he was merely 16, which commemorates its bicentennial this year.

Join the audience for a complimentary pre-performance discussion by Theresa Chafin in Ramsey Concert Hall from 6:45-7:15 p.m.

This performance receives support from Marty Farnsworth and Fred and Amy Young.
