Jiha Moon, a professor at Florida State University in the Department of Art at the College of Fine Arts, specializes in painting, drawing, water-based media, ceramic sculpting, Asian diaspora, and contemporary art. Moon’s expressive paintings and ceramic sculptures that investigate the global movement of individuals and their cultures have been acquired by numerous museums nationwide.

She asserts that South Korea’s culture is favorably represented by the music genre K-pop.

“I believe K-pop is a joyful and engaging way to present Korean culture to audiences worldwide,” Moon stated. “Naturally, it depends on what you’re viewing or listening to — although some elements might be more commercial, various shows, films, and performances also reflect genuine cultural customs or specific historical eras.”

A native of Daegu, South Korea, Moon draws inspiration from a diverse array of Eastern and Western art history, along with colors and designs from popular culture. She holds the belief that South Korea’s focus on K-culture – a global sphere of influence encompassing the K-pop music genre – has been fruitful.

“There’s something quite uplifting about K-pop culture that the world can gain from,” Moon noted. “In many respects, it unifies people across different languages and borders. Given how small Korea is geographically, the worldwide effect is astonishing. The Korean government has historically invested in promoting K-culture, acknowledging its citizens as priceless cultural assets — and now that investment is clearly yielding results.”
