Revolutionizing Learning: Exciting AI Innovations on Coursera for Authors, Partners, and Enterprises

By Patrick Supanc, Chief Product Officer

During our yearly gathering, Coursera Connect, we disclosed numerous new and enhanced AI-driven product functionalities aimed at better supporting our learners, partners, and clients. These advancements will assist learners in acquiring the necessary skills to advance their careers, enable partners to develop high-quality and engaging content, and empower employers to achieve improved results with their educational programs.

Role Play: Cultivating essential skills through practical experiences

Revolutionizing Learning: Exciting AI Innovations on Coursera for Authors, Partners, and Enterprises

Launching next month, Role Play is an innovative course activity that allows learners to develop job-ready competencies and practice interpersonal skills via interactive exchanges with AI personas:

  • Instructor-guided and customizable — Educators and partners have the capability to craft authentic scenarios, delegate roles, and assist learners in honing essential skills aligned with course goals.
  • Boost learner confidence and job readiness — Learners receive individualized, actionable insights and are more effectively equipped to apply their skills in the workforce.
  • Address employer and institutional requirements — Role Play presents a novel, scalable approach to cultivating and evaluating sought-after skills such as leadership and teamwork.

Expanding Course Builder to Collaborators
Course Builder is our GenAI-driven authoring platform, enabling institutions to utilize AI for large-scale course design. Since its inception in 2023, Course Builder has aided our enterprise clients in launching over 4,000 new proprietary enterprise courses and has cut median course development time by 87%.

We are now thrilled to offer Course Builder to our educational partners, enabling them to create and scale high-quality content for Coursera’s worldwide learning catalog at an accelerated pace. Each feature has been crafted with speed, ease of use, and pedagogical excellence in mind, built on insights from Coursera’s expansive learner community. New and improved features include:

  • Authoring from Scratch with just an idea for a course — no outline or existing materials necessary.
  • Course Ingestion of existing content using standard formats like Common Cartridge.
  • Instructional Design Support from an AI-driven assistant.
  • Practical Learning integrations, such as Dialogue and Role Play.
  • AI-evaluated questions to enhance your assessments.*

These fresh capabilities are presently accessible to a limited number of partners and corporate clients. We will continue to refine them based on feedback before making them widely available.*

Facilitating Intelligent Assessments and Encouraging Learner Engagement
Effective education necessitates both thorough evaluation and sustained drive. These new abilities provide educators with scalable methods for assessing advanced skills while supporting learners in maintaining motivation through timely feedback and milestones.

  • AI-Evaluated Questions —Craft open-ended evaluations across formats like essays, code, and video. AI-generated rubrics and automatic scoring save time and ensure equity.
  • AI-Augmented Peer Review — Enhance the peer review process with AI scoring and prompt feedback. Learners can revisit assignments to improve their scores and gain deeper insights.
  • Supporting Learners in Sustaining Motivation and Continuity — Encourage effective learning habits with new session-level milestones, timely nudges, and moments of acknowledgment to help increase completion rates.

Protecting Academic Integrity
Employers desire learning that is directly applicable to the roles and tasks of their teams — and they require evidence that these skills transfer effectively in the workplace. That’s why verified skill assessments are crucial: they demonstrate true mastery, rather than mere course completion. Over the past year, we’ve enhanced our academic integrity features and since May, have proctored over 15,000 examinations — resulting in a 90% reduction in plagiarized submissions and a 95% decrease in overall misconduct. We are broadened these tools to maintain rigor and consistency at scale:

  • Coursera Proctoring & Locking Browser —In the era of GenAI, it’s essential for instructors to have the capability to oversee webcam, microphone, and screen activities. Browser locking can limit access to external applications or resources, ensuring fairness during high-stakes assessments.
  • Course Profiles —New Course Profiles will facilitate institutions in upholding consistent integrity standards throughout their programs. These centralized settings empower key academic integrity features at scale, safeguarding the credibility of their learning and credentials.

Introducing Skill Tracks – a customized, data-driven learning solution
We’re also thrilled to unveil Skill Tracks, a data-driven learning solution aligned with specific careers that guides learners from foundational knowledge to expert proficiency through verified skill pathways. Leveraging Coursera’s Career Graph, Skill Tracks accurately map the connections among jobs, skills, and educational content. Key features include:

  • Personalized learning – Fuse content from leading universities and industry partners with your own materials to align with company tools, workflows, and priorities.
  • Validated credentials – Learners progress through real-world assessments that verify skills are truly mastered, not just completed.
  • Alignment with business objectives – Continuous tracking and updates ensure learning remains relevant to market demands and directly correlates to business performance.

As of today, four Skill Tracks are available: GenAI, Software and Product, IT, and Data, with additional tracks to come. Each Skill Track provides a structured learning journey that distinctly outlines the essential skills and courses employees require at each role and experience level. We have also made considerable advancements in enhancing global access and minimizing language barriers to learning:

  • We now offer 5,600 courses available in up to 26 languages. This means over half of our catalog is now presented in multiple languages — allowing over 50% of the global population to enroll in a course in their native language on Coursera.
  • By the year’s end, we’ll broaden AI dubbing to nearly 1,000 courses across five languages — delivering world-class instruction to more learners in more languages than ever before.

We’re enthusiastic about laying the groundwork for learning in the age of AI. By merging powerful technology with credible content, we’re ushering in a new era of opportunity — one where every learner can validate their skills, every institution can amplify its impact, and every organization can stay attuned to change.
