Michael D. Gebeke, assistant vice president for facilities services at Illinois State University, has been appointed associate vice president for the Facilities Management Division at the University of Georgia following a nationwide search. His tenure will commence on Oct. 6.

Gebeke brings more than 30 years of expertise in facilities management and leadership within higher education, healthcare, and the private sector. At Illinois State, he managed a facilities team of 450 personnel responsible for over 1,100 acres, 187 structures, and 6.8 million gross square feet of area.

He and his team contributed to the progression of several significant capital initiatives, including a $62 million engineering facility to establish that new program, a $20 million expansion of the nursing program, and a development of 1,200-bed student housing and dining hall. He also participated in the university’s COVID-19 steering committee, offering crucial leadership and knowledge in steering campus operations throughout the pandemic.

Before joining Illinois State, Gebeke occupied senior leadership roles in facilities at Kennesaw State University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Ohio University. His career has consistently emphasized innovation, efficiency, sustainability, and staff development. He is a Certified Facility Manager, Certified Educational Facilities Professional, and a LEED Accredited Professional. Gebeke earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from North Dakota State University and an MBA from Webster University.

As the associate vice president for FMD, Gebeke will act as UGA’s senior facilities engineer and work closely with University Architect Gwynne Darden to fulfill the functions of UGA’s chief facilities officer. He will lead FMD in operating and managing about 12 million gross square feet of facilities and 823 acres on UGA’s Athens campus, ensuring that the university’s landscapes, buildings, and infrastructure remain safe, sustainable, and robust. He will also collaborate with over 850 members of the FMD team and campus partners to enhance and promote UGA’s teaching, research, outreach, and student life objectives.

“I am eager to collaborate with Mike and the entire FMD team as we continue to promote UGA’s mission and long-term strategic objectives,” stated Ryan Nesbit, vice president for finance and administration. “I am profoundly appreciative of the search committee, led by Nick Place, dean and director of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, as well as the support from the search firm Spelman Johnson and the UGA Search Group, along with all the university community members who engaged in the process and provided invaluable input. I also extend my heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional leadership Clayton Wilcox has offered while serving as the AVP on an interim basis and for the remarkable service and exceptional work of the entire FMD team during this transition period.”
