baggage-tag-scam

I just came across this:

There’s currently a warning about a travel scam circulating online: It’s advisable to keep your baggage tags attached until you arrive home, at which point you should shred them, as fraudsters are utilizing luggage tags to submit bogus claims for lost luggage with the airline.

Initially, the scam is indeed feasible. Recently, I experienced a bag getting damaged by baggage handlers on a flight, and the details I required to lodge a claim were located on my luggage tag. I’m uncertain if I will successfully receive any compensation from the airline, what the form of it might be, or how it will be associated with my name, but at least the initial step seems plausible.

However…is this happening in reality? Nobody knows. It presents as a rather foolish way to earn a small amount of money. The source of this rumor seems to stem from a single post on Reddit.

And why should I be concerned about this scam? I’m not the one being defrauded; it’s the airline experiencing the scam. I guess the airline might penalize me for reporting a damaged bag, but it looks like a very minimal risk.
