As the new educational term commences on Monday, Aug. 25, Florida State University is set to greet another distinguished cohort of freshmen on campus. Each participant brings a remarkable academic history as they embark on their FSU journey.
Prior to the onset of classes, FSU President Richard McCullough conveyed a message of encouragement to the new students.
“To our newest scholars, I trust that you will embrace the welcoming, amiable, and nurturing atmosphere that distinguishes FSU,” stated FSU President Richard McCullough. “Here, we treat one another with compassion and esteem, partake in meaningful discussions, and appreciate the open exchange of thoughts. We care for ourselves and watch over one another. Welcome to the FSU family!”
The Class of 2029 joins Florida State University as the institution pursues its strategic ambitions to enhance student achievement, establish FSU Health, and foster innovation and entrepreneurship while engaging in significant research.
FSU received over 86,000 applications for a first-year cohort of around 6,200, reflecting a nearly 182% rise in first-year applications during the last decade. The accepted cohort comprises students from all 50 states, 67 counties in Florida, and 50 nations, including admits from 2,751 high schools across the U.S.
The students welcomed this year continue to impress with robust academic performances, with an average core GPA ranging from 4.2 to 4.6, combined SAT scores between 1340 and 1450, and ACT composite scores spanning 30 to 33. The five most sought-after majors were business, biology, exploratory studies, engineering, and political science.
The newly admitted students exhibit a pronounced level of college preparedness, with 77% securing A/B grades in advanced courses, 64% having undertaken calculus or higher-level mathematics, and 765 admitted students obtaining their associate degree while in high school. Furthermore, 25% of the admitted students are among the first in their families to pursue higher education.
FSU presents a variety of pathways for first-year students. Approximately 800 students will commence their FSU experience at Tallahassee State College via FSU Next, while nearly 315 students will begin their FSU journey abroad at one of FSU’s four study centers through First Semester Abroad or First Year Abroad.
Other noteworthy highlights for the upcoming academic term include:
- For the third consecutive year, more than 200 new faculty members in various fields will join FSU this fall.
- This year, 6,707 students will reside in one of FSU’s 18 on-campus housing complexes. University Housing provides diverse living options for undergraduate and graduate students, including ten Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) that will accommodate over 650 first-time college students this year. Residents in LLCs receive guidance from faculty affiliated with one of the colleges or FSU’s Division of Undergraduate Studies.
- FSU is dedicated to expanding programs for high-achieving individuals. The Presidential Scholars Program — the premier undergraduate merit scholarship at FSU — will once again welcome a cohort of 60 first-year students, while the competitive Honors Program will offer transformative and exceptional educational experiences to the new class of more than 800 students.
- “Welcome FSU” is hosting a series of events and activities to launch the fall semester through Saturday, Aug. 30. These activities provide an excellent opportunity for students to discover campus resources, ways to engage, and how to make FSU and Tallahassee their home.
- The FSU football team will kick off its season at the newly renovated Doak S. Campbell Stadium against Alabama at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30. Students are invited to the first Garnet & Gold Tailgate of the season at the Union Green.
