John Thrasher entered Florida State University in 1961 as a first-generation higher education student and subsequently made a significant impact as its 15th president. In the intervening years, he became a distinguished veteran, a legislative figure, and a public servant. However, for those who filled Ruby Diamond Concert Hall on Tuesday to commemorate his life, he was frequently recalled for his kindness, humor, and commitment to his family.

Thrasher, who passed away on May 30 at the age of 81, was honored by friends, colleagues, and family as a man who embodied his principles — faith, family, service, and a love for FSU — with unwavering joy and dedication.

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who delivered the eulogy, highlighted Thrasher’s exceptional talent for leadership and the way he uplifted those around him.

Bush recounted that during his initial campaign for governor in the late 1990s, Thrasher offered him three pieces of wisdom: Connect with individuals through narratives, understand the workings of the state budget, and uphold respect for the legislative process.

“I made a strong effort on the first, but honestly, John was the one who accomplished the rest,” Bush said. “He was a maestro of the process, and because of his guidance, Tallahassee was transformed forever.”

Bush described Thrasher as “the essence of a servant leader,” a person who redirected accolades, distributed credit, and never allowed pride to interfere.
