Fourteen new students began their academic journey this summer through Thrive at Georgia: Bulldog Bridge, a weeklong residential initiative designed to assist students in feeling ready, connected, and enthusiastic about their inaugural year at the University of Georgia.

The initiative, conducted on UGA’s premises from July 25 to Aug. 1, familiarized the students with collegiate life, merging campus exploration, community interaction, and educational sessions.

Coordinated through a collaboration between the Office of Instruction and the Division of Student Affairs’ university transitions department, Thrive at Georgia integrated elements of Dawg Camp with educational activities arranged by the Office for Student Success and Achievement.

“Thrive at Georgia: Bulldog Bridge showcases our dedication to student achievement and inclusion,” stated Cara Winston Simmons, director of OSSA. “Observing these scholars gain confidence, forge significant relationships, and uncover the available resources has been immensely gratifying. Thanks to the generosity of our benefactors, we can provide opportunities that not only prepare students academically but also emphasize that they are cherished members of the UGA community.”

The initiative, now celebrating its 26th year, was restructured to concentrate on supporting students whose scholarships are facilitated through private contributions to make college more achievable. This year’s group comprised Georgia Commitment Scholars, Coca-Cola First-Generation Scholars, and College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Rural Scholars.

Throughout the week, participants explored UGA resources during visits to the Career Center, Ramsey Student Center, and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. They engaged in service activities at a local food bank and cemetery. In academic sessions, the focus was on goal setting, financial literacy, time management, and navigating higher education.

Participants concluded the program with a richer comprehension of UGA’s campus and resources, along with a supportive network of fellow students.

“The Thrive program has genuinely been a wonderful experience,” remarked Emma Metheney, an incoming UGA freshman. “I established numerous new connections that I’m sure will endure throughout my college journey. It has significantly boosted my confidence as I transition into college.”
