The Academy of Legal Studies in Business awarded University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead with the Distinguished Career Achievement Award during its yearly conference on July 31.
This accolade acknowledges ALSB members who exemplify outstanding achievement in the realms of business law and/or ethics throughout their professional journeys. Joan Gabel, president of the University of Pittsburgh, presented the award to Morehead.
A nomination letter drafted by Marisa Pagnattaro, vice president for instruction and senior vice provost for academic planning, along with other UGA legal studies colleagues, underscored Morehead’s remarkable career, which spans more than forty years.
“President Morehead has demonstrated a commitment to service and administration in higher education, establishing himself as a national figure in academic governance and student support,” Pagnattaro remarked. “Advancing from faculty member to president, his leadership has enhanced UGA’s standing nationally through advancements in research, innovation, and student achievement. His involvement in pivotal administrative positions, including provost and director of the Honors Program, shows a profound dedication to UGA’s mission and to promoting excellence across the university.”
Since assuming office in 2013, President Morehead has advocated for experiential learning and academic accessibility. Under his guidance, UGA initiated the nation’s largest experiential learning program, broadened small class selections, and established the Double Dawgs initiative, which allows students to obtain dual degrees within five years. His $6 million Active Learning Initiative has further refreshed teaching methodologies, benefiting over 78,000 students across the campus.
In addition to his role as UGA’s chief executive, Pagnattaro emphasized Morehead’s contributions to the ALSB field, rooted in many years of teaching, mentoring, and developing curricula. In 2001, he was appointed Meigs Professor of Legal Studies, receiving UGA’s highest honor for outstanding classroom instruction. He has also acted as editor-in-chief of the American Business Law Journal and currently serves as an advisory editor. Morehead remains a thought leader in the field as well, participating as a panelist on the “Blue Ribbon Report on the Future of the Discipline” at the 2024 ALSB Annual Conference.
“President Morehead has left a significant mark on higher education, collegiate sports, and the ALSB field while maintaining a strong focus on teaching, mentorship, and aiding students in thriving both academically and personally,” Pagnattaro stated.
